Preview: Track & Field Travels to Grand Valley for the Al Owens Meet this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams will head to Allendale, Mich. this weekend for the Al Owens Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17. Friday's events are scheduled to begin at noon while Saturday's competition will open at 11:00 a.m.

The Al Owens Meet marks the third event of the Lakers 2021 outdoor season as the team, led by head coach Rob Gallinger, looks to continue progressing. Gallinger's squad has set numerous personal-bests while a few student-athletes have bested LSSU school records in the early stages of the outdoor season.

With the majority of the team competing in at least one event at GVSU this weekend, the team is set for a strong performance following last weekend's 2021 Hillsdale Invitational.

On the men's side, one of the key athletes to watch for is Riley Traver, who is coming off a solid performance last weekend at Hillsdale. Traver placed sixth in the 100m dash and will partake in both the 100m and 200m distances this weekend. Lake Superior State will also look forward to the hurdles events as Andrew Giddens and Tom Hanke are both primed for strong showings.

In the men's field events, throwers Timothy Howes and Ryan Reiniche will each compete in two throwing events each. Both student-athletes have improved their personal bests this season and will look to do so again at the Al Owens Meet. Noah Murray and Elijah Denning, both freshmen at LSSU, will both participate in the pole vault and triple jump this weekend. The two first-year athletes hope to continue their early collegiate career successes at GVSU this weekend.

In the women's side of the competition, the Lakers anticipate another strong showing from the team. Elizabeth Setsuda, who has been solid for LSSU in multiple events this year, will compete in the 400m dash and the triple jump event. Riley Collins, a high jumper, will also look to finish in the top of the standings at this weekend's meet.

Also in the field events, the women's team is primed for another impressive meet in throwing events. Freshman Jenna Fleming, a javelin thrower, has been dominant in competition in the opening stages of her collegiate career as she has already set a new school record in the event and sits at the top of the GLIAC standings in the event. With only two meets as a Laker under her belt, Fleming has already provisionally qualified for Nationals in the event. Bethany Wilson will compete for the Lakers for the first time this season as she is a dual-sport athlete at LSSU (Volleyball). Wilson is set to take part in the discus and javelin events.

Brittney Ryan, a thrower for the Lakers, will make her debut in the hammer throw at GVSU this weekend and has the opportunity to make an impact in the standings in her first time competing collegiately in the event.
