Track & Field Ready for a Strong Showing at SVSU's "Doug Hansen" Open

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at Saginaw Valley State University's "Doug Hansen" Open on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Saginaw Valley State University Fieldhouse in University Center, Michigan.

The field events will start at 2:30 p.m. while the running events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Field Events

The events will begin with the high jump at 2:30 p.m., with the Lakers having competitors from both the men's and women's teams. Roger Wilford will compete in the men's event while Riley Collins will compete in the women's event. Kye Heimonen and Riley Nichols are set to partake in the long jump 

men's event which begins at 3:00 p.m. while Breanyl Baker, Ashley Mullings and Elizabeth Setsuda will compete in the women's event. Freshman Sarah Votruba will represent the Lakers in the triple jump which will follow the long jump competition. 

The Lakers will have a number of athletes participating in the throwing events which are set for a 3:00 p.m. start. The weight throw will start with the men's competition and then the women's while the shot put will begin with the women's event followed by the men. Timothy Howes and Ryan Reiniche will compete in the men's throwing events while Sara Ostwald, Moriah Reed and Brittney Ryan will take part in the women's competition. 

Capping off the field events is the pole vault which will start at 3:00 p.m. Willford will compete for the Laker men while Arianna Lazzaro and Votruba will compete for the women. 

Running Events

The running events will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the women running first in all events. The 60 meter hurdles will feature Andrew Giddens in the men's race and Elizabeth Setsuda in the women's race. In the men's 60 meter dash, Riley Nichols, Dwayne Thompson, Riley Traver, and Roger Willford will compete for the Lakers. The women's 60 meter dash will include Shelby Curtiss, Jessica Nicholas and Nadya Woodson. In the 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash, the heat winners and the next best times will advance to the eight lane final.

In the 200 meter distance, the Lakers will have a strong presence in the women's race with Ellie Bell, Shelby Curtiss, Alyssa Mulford, Jessica Nicholas and Nadya Woodson competing. The 400 meter race will include Tom Hanke on the men's side and Alyssa Mulford on the women's side. Emily Merten and Caitlyn Schumann will represent the Lakers in the 800 meter distance. 

The mile distance will feature Laker men's runners Kevin Garland, David Mitter, and Eric Somsky. Rebecca Lathrop, Emily Merten and Alexis Passino will run the mile in the women's competition. In the longest distance of the meet, the 3000 meter race, the Lakers will be led by David Mitter and Kendal Delpiere on the men's side and Leah Bell and Melody Perrin on the women's side. 

In the final event of the meet, the 4 x 400 meter relay, the Lakers anticipate strong performances from both their men's and women's foursomes. The men's relay team is comprised of Andrew Giddens, Tom Hanke, Dwayne Thompson and Riley Traver while the women's team consists of Breanyl Baker, Ellie Bell, Riley Collins, and Elizabeth Setsuda

The Lakers will return to competition at the 2020 Conference Crossover hosted by Hillsdale College on Friday, Jan. 24.
