Lakers Compete in the SVSU "Doug Hansen" Open

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams competed at Saginaw Valley State University's "Doug Hansen" Open at the Saginaw Valley State University Fieldhouse in University Center, Michigan.

Field Events

In the women's pole vault competition, Sarah Votruba tied for fourth with a height of 2.82 meters. Votruba also competed in the women's triple jump where she posted a distance of 9.65 meters. The women's long jump saw Elizabeth Setsuda post a distance of 5.05 meters, Ashley Mullings record a 4.97 meter jump and Breanyl Baker registered a distance of 4.55 meters. 

Brittney Ryan placed 12th out of 28 competitors in the shot put as she threw a distance of 10.74 meters, while Moriah Reed threw for 9.47 meters and Sara Ostwald threw for 9.24 meters. The same three Laker females competed in the weight throw, with Reed leading the way among her teammates with an 11.86 meter throw. Ryan threw for a distance of 11.77 meters and Ostwald recorded an 11.55 meter throw. 

Roger Willford placed first in the men's pole vault competition as he cleared a height of 4.60 meters at the meet.  In the men's high jump competition, Willford placed in the top three with a height of 1.91 meters. 

Riley Nichols (5.87 meters) and Kye Heimonen (4.91 meters) were the participants for the Lakers in the men's long jump event. 

In the throwing events, Ryan Reiniche placed fourth in a tough shot put field as he threw for a distance of 13.78 meters. Reiniche threw 10.39 meters in the weight throw. Timothy Howes threw for 10.70 meters in the shot put and 11.38 meters in the weight throw. 

Running Events

In the men's 60 meter dash, Dwayne Thompson had a strong showing in the preliminary race as he placed fifth with a time of 7.32 to advance to the finals. Roger Willford and Riley Traver tied with a time a 7.43 in the preliminaries while Riley Nichols rounded out the Lakers with a time of 7.73. In the 60 meter dash finals, Thompson placed eighth in the field with a time of 7.24. 

In the men's 60 meter hurdles, Andrew Giddens placed ninth with a time of 8.93 in the event. In the 400 meter dash, Tom Hanke placed fifth with a time of 52.95.

David Mitter's strong performances for the Lakers continued at the SVSU Fieldhouse as he finished sixth in the one mile run with a time of 4:20.68. Kevin Garland (5:19.88) and Eric Somsky (5:36.15) also competed in the mile run for Lakers. 

Mitter's successful day would be highlighted by his first place finish in the men's 3000 meter run as he posted a time of 8:48.52 which was almost six seconds faster than the next finisher. Kendal Delpiere would also finish in the top 10 as he placed ninth with a time of 9:34.14.

The Lakers men's 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Dwayne Thompson, Riley Traver, Tom Hanke, and Andrew Giddens ran a strong race, finishing fourth with a time of 3:38:10.

In the women's 60 meter dash, Nadya Woodson led the Laker women with a time of 8.74, Shelby Curtiss ran an 8.95 and Jessica Nicholas posted a time of 9.05. In the women's 60 meter hurdles, Elizabeth Setsuda ran an 11.14 in the preliminary race.

The women's 200 meter dash featured five Lakers including Ellie Bell (29.56), Nadya Woodson (29.67), Jessica Nicholas (31.14), Shelby Curtiss (31.29) and Alyssa Mulford (33.46). Mulford was the sole representative for the Lakers in the women's 400 meter dash and she finished with a time of 1:13.83.

In the longer distances of the female competition, the Lakers had Emily Merten (2:53.31) and Caitlyn Schumann (3:02.67) compete in the 800 meter run. In the one mile distance, Rebecca Lathrop placed 19th to finish among the top half of finishers with a time of 5:31.11 while Alexis Passino (5:48.89) and Emily Merten (6:21.86) also competed for the Lakers. In the longest race of the day, the 3000 meter run, Leah Bell finished with a time of 12:29.37 and Melody Perrin completed the distance in 14:11.44.

The Lakers women's 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Breanyl Baker, Ellie Bell, Riley Collins and Elizabeth Setsuda had a strong race as they placed fifth in the event with a time of 4:19.61.
