Lakers Track & Field Team Competes in the 2020 Conference Crossover Meet

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2020 Conference Crossover hosted by Hillsdale College on Friday, Jan. 24 in Hillsdale, Mich. 

Running Events

In the women's 60 meter dash, freshman Breanyl Baker had a strong showing for the Lakers as she finished in second place with a time of 8.18. Nadya Woodson (8.68), Jessica Nicholas (9.14) and Shelby Curtiss (9.18) also competed for the Lakers. 

Woodson had the fastest finish among the Lakers in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.43 to place seventh. Ellie Bell (30.28) and Alyssa Mulford (32.60) were the other Laker runners in the event. 

In the longer distance events, the Lakers were led by Rebecca Lathrop who ran a 5:34.88 mile to place first overall in the event. Lathrop also ran the 800 meter distance for the Lakers, finishing with a time of 2:55.86.

Dwayne Thompson ran a 7.23 60 meter dash to finish first among the Lakers and second among all participants. Riley Traver (7.40) and Riley Nichos (7.73) also competed in the event. Tom Hanke competed for the Lakers in the 800 meter run and finished in sixth place with a time of 2:11.04.

For the second weekend in a row, David Mitter had a strong showing for the Lakers in the men's distance events as he placed first in both the mile run and the 3000 meter run. Mitter ran the mile in 4:30.30 and the 3000 meters in 8:48.67.

In the men's 60 meter hurdles, Andrew Giddens qualified for the finals as he posted a time of 8.82 in the preliminaries to finish sixth overall. Giddens ran for a time of a 8.89 to place ninth in the finals.

Field Events

In the women's high jump event, Riley Collins finished in fourth place with a height of 1.58 meters while Sarah Votruba represented the Lakers in the pole vault competition with an eighth place finish with a height of 2.69 meters. Breanyl Baker placed sixth in the women's long jump with a distance of 4.98 meters while Ashley Mullings finished seventh as she recorded a distance of 4.96 meters in the event. 

In the throwing events at the Conference Crossover, Brittney Ryan threw the shot put for a distance of 11.12 meters to place seventh in the event. Sara Ostwald placed 10th in the shot put with a distance of 9.70 meters while also placing 10th in the weight throw with a distance of 12.36 meters. Moriah Reed placed 11th in both throwing events as she threw for a distance of 9.59 meters in the shot put and 12.26 meters in the weight throw. 

In the men's pole vault competition, Roger Willford finished fifth among the athletes with a height of 4.42 meters. Willford also competed in the long jump event as he placed ninth with a distance of 5.93 meters while his teammate Riley Nichols finished 10th with a distance of 5.52 meters. 

In the throwing events, Ryan Reiniche threw for a distance of 13.11 meters in the shot put and 9.99 meters in the weight throw. Timothy Howes posted a distance of 10.72 meters in the shot put and 11.24 meters in the weight throw. Rounding out the Lakers throwers, Kye Heimonen threw for a distance of 10.25 meters in the shot put competition.

The Lakers will have a break in action before returning to competition on Friday, Feb 7 at the 2020 Hillsdale "Wide-Track" Classic hosted by Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich.
