Preview: Laker Hockey Return to Home Ice to Take on Ferris State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich, - The Lake Superior State hockey program (3-17-2, 2-10-1 CCHA) is set for their first Central Collegiate Hockey Association home series of the new year when they host the Ferris State Bulldogs (9-9-2, 6-5-1 CCHA) inside Taffy Abel Arena with puck drop for game one scheduled for 7:07 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13.

Stories to watch:

  • LSSU leads the all-time series against the Bulldogs 81-61-15, including winning three of four matchups last season.

  • Junior goaltender Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) has had plenty of success against the Bulldogs, earning two of his four career shutouts against Ferris State last season (Dec. 3, 2021 and Feb. 12, 2022).
  • The Lakers are coming off of a pair of losses at Bowling Green, but they were still able to find some success despite that as Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) doubled up his total goals this season with three power play scores while Jacob Bengtsson (Stockholm, Sweden) assisted on all five Laker goals to pick up more points on the weekend than any other CCHA defenseman. The only skater in the CCHA to produce more points over the past weekend than Bengtsson was Bowling Green's Austen Swankler (1G, 5A).

  • Senior Jared Kucharek (Royal Oak, Mich.) came away with his first official goal in a Laker uniform against Bowling Green this past weekend, his first goal in nearly three years (Jan. 24, 2020).

  • The Bulldogs are coming off of a second place finish at the Great Lakes Invitational after upsetting then No. 11 Michigan State in the semifinals before falling to the eventual champion Western Michigan by a final score of 8-2. Mitch Deelstra would become the first Ferris State player to be named to a GLI All-Tournament team after notching four points (2G, 2A) against a pair of nationally ranked opponents.

  • Ferris State got off to a strong start in the month of December with a sweep of Minnesota State in Mankato.

  • The Lakers were also able to pick up a pair of impressive wins in the month of December with a 3-2
  • The Bulldogs currently hold a 4-3-1 record against top-20 ranked opponents so far this season.

  • Ferris State currently boasts four different players with at least ten points, led by Stepan Pokorny with 13 (6G, 7A).

  • Eleven different Lakers have recorded at least five points entering the series against Ferris State with Louis Boudon (Grenoble, France), Bengtsson, and Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) each having at least ten.

  • The Lakers' captain Boudon leads the team in scoring with 16 points (7G, 9A) after 22 games.
