SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (0-2) is set to host the Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage (1-1) in their home-opener inside Taffy Abel Arena as part of Great Lake State Weekend on Friday and Saturday.
Series Preview
- The Lakers and Seawolves face off for their 27th and 28th matchups with the Lakers holding a 16-8-2 overall record against their former WCHA rivals.
- The most recent meeting between the two programs resulted in a 3-3 tie in January of 2020.
- The Seawolves are coming off of a series split against UMass Lowell to open their season while the Lakers fell in both contests against the Michigan State Spartans despite battling throughout both games.
- The Lakers have already seen new faces rise to the occasion so far this season, highlighted by John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) who was named the CCHA Rookie of the Week after opening weekend.
- Captains Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) and Artyom Borshyov (Vitebsk, Belarus) were able to record their first points of the season against Michigan State.
- The Lakers will also be celebrating Great Lake State Weekend, and hockey alum Mark Vermette will be recognized as part of his induction into the LSSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Alum Doug Weight will also be recognized with the Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Point Producers
- The Lakers return their leading goal-scorer from a year ago in co-captain Roy (12), and his seven power play goals last season ranked second in the CCHA.
- Assistant captain Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) posted nine goals and eight assists for 17 points last season, and he is the top returning point-producer from a year ago.
- Eight different Lakers notched their first points of the season on opening weekend against Michigan State.
2023-24 Laker Firsts
- Herrington made his collegiate debut on the Lakers top line against Michigan State.
- Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.), Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.), Ross Roloson (Woodbury, Minn.), Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.), Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.), Cam Kungle (Red Deer, Alb.), Jack Blanchett (Monroe, Mich.), and Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) also made their debuts for the Lakers on opening weekend against MSU.
- Batchelder and R. Milburn earned their first career assists on opening weekend at No. 9 MSU.
- Herrington scored the first goal of his career to bring the Lakers back within one against No. 9 MSU.
