Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Lewis University, 84-57

ROMEOVILLE Ill. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team dropped a 84-57 games against the Lewis University Flyers on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3:00 p.m. to close out the first half of the season.

To open the game, the Lakers would fall behind to the Flyers with the home team building a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of action. At 12:18 of the first half, freshman Xander Okerlund would make a three pointer to bring the Lakers within half of the Flyers (14-7). Throughout the half, Lewis' offense would continue to find the net extending the lead to 11 points before Ke'Montrece Collins would make a three point shot to bring the Lakers back within single digits of the Flyers (24-16). With just over a minute remaining in the first half, Jackson Schrameyer would make three free throws for the Lakers to round out the team's scoring in the opening 20 minutes of play. The half would end with the Lakers trailing Lewis by 15 points, 41-26. 

The first few minutes of play in the second half saw a lot of offense from the two teams as the Lakers scored seven points in the 2:19 compared to four from the Flyers. However, the Flyers would then go on a scoring nine straight points to go ahead 54-33. Cody Ley, off the Lakers bench, would sink a three pointer to start a rally from the Lakers as the team would tighten the Flyers lead to 11 points at the midway point of the half (56-45). 

With just over five minutes left in the game, Lewis was still holding a 19 point lead over the Lakers (69-50). In the final minutes of the game, the lead that the Flyers had complied proved to be too much for the Lakers to overcome as the game ended with a final score of 84-57.

The Lakers point leader in the game was Justin Fischer who had 12 points in the game as well as a team-leading five assists. Freshman Nigel Colvin was the only other player for the Lakers to record double digits in points in the game as he had 10 points against the Flyers. Schrameyer would finish the game with a solid stat line for the Lakers as he recorded nine points and five rebounds. 

In the game, the Lakers shot at a 37.0 percentage compared to the 48.3 shooting percentage by the Flyers. Lewis also outrebounded the Lakers by a 46-29 margin which contributed to the win.

The Lakers will open the second half of the season and the start of the 2020 calendar year with a home game against Davenport in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 2 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
