Track & Field Competes at GVSU's Al Owens Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams competed at Grand Valley State's Al Owens Meet on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 at GVSU's Track & Field Stadium in Allendale, Mich. 

Despite rough weather conditions during the weekend, a number of athletes had strong performances for the Lakers as the team gears up for conference championships. 

The Lakers saw a few distance runners set new PRs at the Al Owens Meet in the 1500 meter distance. In the men's race, Aaron Nachazel took nearly four seconds off his time as he set a new personal best in the event with a time of 4:26.38. In the women's race, both Olivia Stevens (6:03.86) and Katelyn Moore (6:28.79) set new personal records in the 1500 meter distance. Freshman Kate Baker also competed for the Lakers in the 1500 meter distance, posting a time of 6:13.64 as she made her collegiate debut after being sidelined with an injury since joining the team.

Kara Mosher represented the Lakers in the 400 meter race and set a new personal record with a time of 1:09.71.

Andrew Giddens recorded two top-10 finishes for the Lakers in the men's hurdles events. Giddens posted a time of 15.23 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles to place fourth overall and followed with a fifth place finish in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.69 seconds. 

In the men's high jump event, Riley Traver placed fifth among competitors with a mark of 1.86 meters as he set a new personal record in the event. Traver's previous best in the high jump was 1.75 meters. 

The Lakers had another strong showing in the throwing events as there were multiple PRs set as well as numerous top-10 finishes. In the men's discus, Ryan Reiniche placed first overall with a personal best throw of 44.59 meters. It marked the first time that Reiniche has surpassed the 44 meter mark in the discus in his collegiate career. Timothy Howes recorded fifth place finish in the men's hammer throw event with a mark of 40.01 meters on Saturday. 

In the women's throwing events, Jenna Fleming registered her second first-place finish this season in the women's javelin event with a throw of 40.53 meters. Brittney Ryan recorded a ninth place finish in the women's shot put with a mark of 10.89 meters. Bethany Wilson continued her strong season in the women's discus as she placed third overall in the event with a mark of 38.16 meters.

What's Next

The Lakers will compete in Western Michigan's Jack Shaw Invite next weekend on Saturday, April 30, marking the final meet for the Lakers before the GLIAC Outdoor Championships.
