Preview: Track & Field Ready to Take Part in GVSU's Al Owens Meet

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams will continue the 2022 outdoor season this weekend as the team is set to compete at Grand Valley State's Al Owens Classic on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23. The two-day meet will be held at GVSU's Track & Field Stadium in Allendale, Mich. 

Friday's Events

Friday's events are set to begin at 12:00 p.m. with the women's hammer throw, followed by the same event for the men. Maddison Gould will represent the women's team in the event for the Lakers while Kamuran Ramandanov and Timothy Howes will compete in the men's event. Also scheduled for a noon start is the men's and women's javelin competition. The men's javelin event will include Howes while the women's competition will include Bethany Wilson and Jenna Fleming for the Lakers. 

The final event set for Friday is the men's and women's triple jump, which will begin at 1:00 p.m.. Riley Traver will be representing the Lakers in the men's competition while freshman Jayda Williams looks to have a strong showing for the Lakers in the women's event.

Saturday's Events

On Saturday, the field and running events are both set to start at 11:00 a.m. The men's shot put will open the field events and the women's shot put will take place directly after. Kamuran Ramandanov and Ryan Reiniche will compete in the men's shot put while Brittney Ryan and Maddison Gould will take part in the women's event. The discus competition is also set to start at 11:00 a.m. with the women's event opening and the men's event following. The Lakers will be represented by Bethany Wilson, Jenna Fleming, Brittney Ryan, and Maddison Gould in the women's event and Ryan Reiniche, Timothy Howes, and Kamuran Ramandanov in the men's discus event. 

The 5,000 meter race will open the running events at 11:00 a.m. and the Lakers will be well represented in the men's event. Roy Bowman, Kendal Delpiere, Ethan Nachazel, Skylar Williams, and Reese Camp will be running in the men's race for the Lakers. 

At noon, the long jump event is set to begin with Jayda Williams and Breanyl Baker taking part in the women's competition and Riley Nichols taking part in the men's event. At 12:30 p.m., the high jump will conclude the field events for the Lakers with Riley Traver competing for the Lakers in the men's event. 

The rest of Saturday will be dedicated to running events, beginning with the men's 110 meter hurdles. Andrew Giddens will represent the Lakers in the event with the prelims taking place at 12:20 p.m. and the finals set for 2:30 p.m.

At 1:00 p.m., the 4x100 meter relay will take place with the women's team being represented by the team of Kara Mosher, Breanyl Baker, Jayda Williams, and Sofia Salazar.

The 1500 meter run will follow at 1:15 p.m. with a number of Laker athletes taking part in both the men's and women's races. The women's race will include Olivia Stevens, Katelyn Moore, Kate Baker and Gwen Phillips while the men's race will feature Ryan O'Neill and Aaron Nachazel

At 2:10 p.m., the 400 meter race will take place. The women's race will include Kara Mosher while the men's event will include Michael Sherman and Eric Somsky

After the 110 meter hurdles final concludes, the 100 meter dash will take place at 2:35 p.m. The Lakers will be represented by Riley Nichols, Dwayne Thompson, and Nikolas Curlett. The 800 meter event will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Sofia Salazar, Sydney Kapushinski and Josie Morrow competing for the Lakers in the women's event. 

Andrew Giddens will compete in his second hurdles event of the day at 3:30 p.m. in the men's 400 meter hurdles race. 

At 3:45 p.m., the 200 meter race is scheduled to begin with Breanyl Baker and Sarah Votruba competing in the women's event, and Blake Dunning and Nikolas Curlett competing in the men's event. 

The final event of the Al Owens Meet will be the 4x400 meter relay at 4:45 p.m. The Lakers will have a women's relay team of Sofia Salazar, Sydney Kapushinski, Kara Mosher, and Josie Morrow competing in the event to close out the meet.
