Jenna Fleming & David Mitter Set New School Records at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams had a number of athletes compete at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, hosted by Bucknell University, on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 in Lewisburg, Penn.

The weekend of events was highlighted by a pair of new school records by senior David Mitter and sophomore Jenna Fleming. Mitter set a new LSSU outdoor record in the men's 10,000 meter race while Fleming bested her own record in the women's javelin event. In addition to the new school records, both Mitter and Fleming posted NCAA provisional qualifier marks in their respective events.

"We had a great weekend giving six of our athletes opportunities to compete at a prestigious meet with national caliber competition," said head coach Tony Filipek. "This is an important piece in preparing our student athletes for the championship segment of our season. Building a champion mindset is an outcome of competing in meets like this."

Mitter finished 17th overall in the 10k race on Friday night with a time of 30:11.44 to meet the NCAA provisional mark (30:35.82). The senior distance runner set a new personal record in the event while also breaking Justin Andre's record of 30:17.13 in the outdoor 10k, which has stood for 20 years (2002).

Fleming threw for a third place finish among javelin competitors with a mark of 47.17 meters. The sophomore thrower improved her own record in the event that she set as a freshman at Miami (Ohio) in March 2021 (45.16 meters). At the Bison Outdoor Classic, Fleming registered four throws over 46 meters and currently ranks fifth in women's javelin among all DII competitors. With the career performance, Fleming surpassed the NCAA provisional mark of 41.92 meters to likely clinch her spot in this year's DII Championships.

In addition to Mitter and Fleming, the Lakers also were represented by Jayda Williams in the women's long jump, Bethany Wilson in the women's discus, Noah Murray in the men's pole vault, and Andrew Giddens in the men's 110 meter hurdles.

The Lakers will return to competition on Saturday, April 23 as the team is set to participate in Grand Valley State's Al Owens Classic in Allendale, Mich.
