Laker Track & Field Posts Two First Place Finishes, Multiple Top-10 Finishes at the Golden Grizzlies Invite

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams competed at Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies Track & Field Invite on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at the Oakland Track & Field Complex in Rochester, Mich. 

With the meet marking the second competition for the Lakers during the outdoor season, the team had a strong showing with two first-place finishes as well as a number of top-10 finishes. 

On the first day of the Golden Grizzlies Invite, senior David Mitter placed first in the men's steeplechase while sophomore Jenna Fleming also posted a top finish in the women's javelin. Mitter recorded a time of 9:22.69 in his first time competing in the steeplechase event and currently holds the second best time in the GLIAC this season. Fleming recorded a season-best mark of 41.78 meters in the javelin competition to win the event at Oakland. The Laker sophomore holds the top mark in the javelin throw this season. 

Bethany Wilson also had a strong showing in the women's javelin as she placed ninth overall with a throw of 26.29 meters to set a new PR in the event. Wilson followed with an eighth place finish in the women's discus event on Saturday with a mark of 37.98 meters. 

Andrew Giddens recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in the men's hurdles events. Giddens placed second in the men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.06 and followed with a sixth place result in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.38.

Freshman Jayda Williams recorded a seventh place finish in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.10 meters on Friday and followed with a sixth place finish in the triple jump on Saturday. Williams posted a mark of 10.24 meters in the triple jump competition. 

In the men's throwing events, both Ryan Reiniche and Timothy Howes had strong weekends for the Lakers. Howes set a new PR in the hammer throw with an eighth place finish in the event with a throw of 43.24 meters. Howes followed with a 13th place finish in the men's javelin (31.23 meters) in his collegiate debut in the event. Reiniche recorded a sixth place finish in the shot put (13.36 meters) and a fifth place finish in the discus event (40.22 meters).

What's Next

The Lakers will return to competition next Friday, April 15 as the team is set to compete in the Bucknell Bison Classic next Friday, April 15 in Lewisburg, Penn.
