Preview: Laker Track & Field to Compete in Oakland's Golden Grizzlies Invite this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams will continue the 2022 outdoor season this weekend as the team is set to compete at Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies Track & Field Invite on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9. The two-day meet will be held at the Oakland Track & Field Complex in Rochester, Mich. 

Friday's Events

Friday's field events are set to begin at 2:00 p.m. with the women's hammer throw, followed by the same event for the men. Senior Timothy Howes will be competing in the men's hammer throw competition for the Lakers. The javelin event is also scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start and the Lakers will be represented by Jenna Fleming and Bethany Wilson. Fleming, who finished second overall in last weekend's MSU Spartan Invitational, currently holds the top mark in the GLIAC in the javelin (41.43m). Howes will compete in the javelin event for the first time in his collegiate career. 

Jayda Williams will look to continue her strong freshman season as she competes in the women's long jump event at 3:00 p.m. to wrap up Friday's field events for the Lakers. 

Senior distance runner David Mitter will be the lone Laker to take part in a running event on Friday as he is set to take part in the men's steeplechase at 7:15 p.m. It will be the first time Mitter is competing in the steeplechase event at the collegiate level. 

Saturday's Events

On Saturday, the field and running events are both set to start at noon. The discus event will open the field competition and the Lakers will be well represented in both the women's and men's throwing event. Jenna Fleming, Maddison Gould, Brittany Ryan, and Bethany Wilson will take part in the women's discus competition while Timothy Howes, Kamuran Ramadanov, and Ryan Reiniche will compete in the men's event. 

The shot put is also slated for a 12:00 p.m. start with the men's event followed by the women's event. Ramadanov and Reiniche will each be competing in their second event of the day at the men's shot put. In the women's shot put, Gould and Ryan will also take part in the second event of the day as they represent the Lakers in the throwing event.

The triple jump is also scheduled for a noon start and Jayda Williams will take part in the women's event for the Lakers. Sophomore Noah Murray will compete in the men's triple jump event for LSSU. 

At 2:00 p.m., the high jump event will close out the field events at Oakland. The men's event will take place first with Noah Murray and Riley Traver competing for the Lakers. 

The running events will open for the Lakers with the men's 110 meter hurdles prelims at 12:15 p.m. Andrew Giddens will take part in the event and will look to secure a top-eight finish to advance to the event finals. The 110 meter hurdles final will be held at 2:30 p.m.

The men's 100 meter dash prelims will begin at 12:45 p.m. and will include Nikolas Curlett, Riley Nichols, and Dwayne Thompson. The 100 meter dash finals are slated for 3:05 p.m. 

After a scheduled break in the running events, competition for the Lakers will resume at 1:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter relays. The women's team for LSSU is set to include Kara Mosher, Breanyl Baker, Jayda Williams, and Sofia Salazar

At 2:35 p.m., the women's 400 meter race will take place. Sydney Kapushinski, Kara Mosher and Sofia Salazar will all compete for the Lakers in the event. The men's 400 meter run, set for 2:45 p.m., will include Blake Dunning for the Lakers. 

The women's and men's 800 meter races are set to take place at 3:20 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. The women's 800 meter event will include Leah Bell, Katelyn Moore, Josie Morrow, and Olivia Stevens. The men's event will be well represented by the Lakers as the entries include Roy Bowman, Kendal Delpiere, Aaron Nachazel, Ethan Nachazel, Ryan O'Neill. Michael Rand, Michael Sherman, Eric Somsky, and Skylar Williams

At 3:45 p.m., Andrew Giddens will compete in his second hurdles event of the day as he races in the men's 400 meter hurdles. 

The final individual running event of the day on Saturday will be the women's and men's 200 meter races. The women's race is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start with Breanyl Baker, Gabrielle Minier, Sarah Votruba, and Jayda Williams set to compete for the Lakers. Nikolas Curlett, Blake Dunning, and Dwayne Thompson will participate in the men's event at 4:15 p.m.

The Golden Grizzlies Invite will conclude with the 4x400 meter relays, and the Lakers have a team entered in the men's event. Andrew Giddens, Michael Sherman, David Mitter, and Ryan O'Neill are scheduled to compete for the Lakers at the final event of the day at 4:35 p.m.
