Track & Field Ends Indoor Season at the GLIAC Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field team closed out the 2021-22 indoor season at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Grand Valley State University hosted meet in Allendale, Mich. The women's team recorded two points at the conference championship while the men's team earned 21 points at the meet. 

In the women's long jump event, both Laker participants had strong individual showings. Freshman Jayda Williams earned the Lakers a point as she finished in eighth place with a jump of 5.13 meters. Breanyl Baker, a junior, posted a 10th place finish as she set a new PR in the event with a mark of 4.78 meters.

In the men's long jump competition, Noah Murray placed ninth overall with a 5.95 meter result and Riley Nichols followed in 11th place with a mark of 5.67 meters. 

Brittney Ryan represented the Lakers in the women's weight throw and finished in 13th place among her conference peers with a throw of 11.06 meters. In the men's weight throw on Saturday, Timothy Howes placed 14th among competitors with a throw of 13.18 meters. 

Andrew Giddens advanced to the 60 meter hurdles finals after recording a time of 8.73 seconds in Saturday's prelims. In Sunday's finals, Giddens posted a seventh place finish in the race with a time of 8.76 seconds to earn two points for the Lakers. 

Senior David Mitter earned the Lakers six points with his third place finish in the men's 5000 meter run. Mitter posted a time of 14:33.94 in the distance event while his classmate Kendal Delpiere also competed in the race. Delpiere recorded a time of 15:55.20 for the Lakers. 

The first day of competition closed with the men's and women's distance medley relays. The women's team, which was made up of Sydney Kapushinski, Breanyl Baker, Sofia Salazar, and Josie Morrow placed ninth with a time of 14:55.59. The men's team of Ryan O'Neill, Andrew Giddens, Michael Sherman and Roy Bowman finished in seventh place with a time of 10:43.57 to earn two points for the Lakers. 

Sunday's events opened with the men's high jump competition. Noah Murray competed in the event for the Lakers and finished in ninth place with a personal best height of 1.76 meters. 

In the men's and women's shot put events, the Lakers were represented by Ryan Reiniche and Brittney Ryan. Reiniche finished in 10th place with a throw of 14.11 meters while Ryan placed 15th among her GLIAC peers with a PR throw of 11.04 meters. 

Noah Murray set his second PR of the day as he recorded a mark of 12.50 meters in the men's triple jump competition. Murray finished in fourth place in the event to clinch five points for the Lakers. 

David Mitter added another four points for Lake Superior State as he crossed the finish line fifth in the men's mile race. Mitter set a new PR in the mile with a time of 4:11.75.

Jayda Williams continued her solid freshman season for the Lakers as she earned another point for the women's team with an eighth place finish in the women's triple jump competition. Williams recorded a mark of 10.32 meters in the event. 

The Lakers closed out the conference championship with the men's and women's 1600 meter relays. The women's team of Breanyl Baker, Sydney Kapushinski, Jayda Williams, and Sofia Salazar finished in ninth place with a time of 4:36.04. The men's relay squad of Andrew Giddens, Michael Sherman, Roy Bowman, and Ryan O'Neill earned two points with a seventh place finish with a time of 3:30.07.
