Track & Field Ready to Compete at the 2022 GLIAC Indoor Championships this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams will close out the 2022 indoor season this weekend as the team competes at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships. The two-day conference championships, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27, will be hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

Saturday's Events

With events set to begin at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, the Lakers will open the championship competition with the women's weight throw. Brittney Ryan, who recorded a season-best throw of 11.72 meters at the Jack Skoog Open, will represent the Lakers in the event.

Freshman Jayda Williams and junior Breanyl Baker will both partake in the women's long jump event at 3:00 p.m. Williams' best performance in the long jump this season came at the Jack Skoog Open as she posted a mark of 5.36 meters, which is eighth-best in the GLIAC this season.

The men's 60 meter hurdles prelims are set for a 3:45 p.m. start and Andrew Giddens will participate in the event for LSSU. Gidden's best time this season was 8.64 seconds at the SVSU Holiday Open & Multis in early December, which stands as the ninth-best time this season in the conference. The men's 60 meter hurdles final is scheduled for 12:50 p.m. on Sunday.

Williams will compete in her second event of the championships at 4:30 p.m. when she races in the women's 60 meter dash prelims. The freshman holds the 13th best time in the GLIAC this season (8.01 seconds). The 60 meter dash final is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. on Sunday.

At 5:15 p.m., the final two field events of Day One will take place. Timothy Howes will represent the team in the men's weight throw competition and looks to build on his PR mark from last weekend's GVSU Tune-Up (13.90 meters). The men's long jump will take place simultaneously with Noah Murray and Riley Nichols competing for the Lakers. Murray holds the 12th-best mark in the GLIAC this season (6.07m) while Nichols follows in 13th place with a 5.94 meter jump.

The final individual event for the Lakers on Saturday is the men's 5,000 meter run. The men's final is set for a 5:25 p.m. start. Seniors Kendal Delpiere and David Mitter will both compete in the distance race for the Lakers. Mitter currently holds the fifth-best time in the conference after posting a time of 14:30.56 at GVSU's Big Meet. Mitter will look to be a top-finisher among his conference peers in the event.

The opening day of competition will close with the women's and men's distance medley relays at 6:20 p.m. and 6:35 p.m., respectively. The women's team will consist of Sydney Kapushinski, Breanyl Baker, Sofia Salazar, and Josie Morrow while the men's team is made up of Ryan O'Neill, Andrew Giddens, Michael Sherman, and Roy Bowman.

Sunday's Events

The men's high jump at 10:30 a.m. will mark the first event with Lakers scheduled to compete in on Sunday. Noah Murray and Riley Traver are both set to participate in the event. Murray set a personal record of 1.73 meters earlier this season while Traver also set a new PR this winter with a mark of 1.78 meters.

The women's shot put will follow at 11:00 a.m. and Brittney Ryan will once again be representing the Lakers women's team in the throwing event. Ryan set a season-best mark of 10.56 meters at last weekend's GVSU Tune-Up.

Murray will compete in his second event of the day at 11:30 a.m. as he participates in the men's triple jump. The sophomore holds the fifth-best mark in the GLIAC this season as he cleared 11.99 meters at GVSU Tune-Up.

Mitter will return to the track on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. as he competes in the men's mile race. The Laker distance runner will look to build upon his strong collegiate career as he enters the championship run with the ninth-best time in the GLIAC this year. Mitter recorded a PR time of 4:12.32 at GVSU Tune-Up.

The men's shot put and women's triple jump are both slated to start at 12:45 p.m. Ryan Reiniche, who holds the 11th best mark in the GLIAC this year (15.52m), will represent the Lakers in the men's throwing event. Jayda Williams will continue her full weekend of events as she competes for the Lakers in the triple jump. Williams' 10.39 meter jump from the Jack Skoog Open stands as the seventh-best in the conference this season.

The GLIAC Championships will wrap up with the women's and men's 1600 meter relays at 2:50 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.  The women's relay team will consist of Breanyl Baker, Sydney Kapushinski, Jayda Williams, and Sofia Salazar while the men's relay squad will include Andrew Giddens, Michael Sherman, Roy Bowman, and Ryan O'Neill
