Laker Volleyball Earns Season Sweep Over Parkside With 3-0 Win

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Lake Superior State volleyball program (5-21, 4-11 GLIAC) came away with a 3-0 victory on the road over the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside (9-17, 3-12 GLIAC) to sweep the season series on Friday.

Both teams battled early on their way to a 5-5 tie, but the Lakers utilized a pair of 3-0 runs that featured back-to-back kills from Emilee McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) to push out ahead. The Rangers fought back to tie the set at 19-19, but Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) made her presence felt with four kills to end the set on a 6-1 run, taking it by a score of 25-20.

The Rangers were able to take an early three point lead in the second set, but the Lakers seized the momentum with an 8-1 run behind multiple kills from reigning GLIAC Setter of the Week Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.). They would then continue to press the attack with runs of 4-1 and 4-0 to take a commanding 21-13 lead. The Rangers would try to rally, but a kill from Valeriya Varnakova (Ufa, Russia) and a block from Kalinowski claimed the second set for the Lakers by a score of 25-18.

The Lakers came out strong in the third set with runs of 4-1 and 6-1 for an early seven-point advantage. The offensive firepower would continue with multiple kills from Velasque and Taylor Fleming (Rogers City, Mich.) propelled the Lakers to two more runs of 4-0 to go up by twelve points before ultimately taking the set and the match in dominant fashion by respective scores of 25-14 and 3-0.

Fleming led the attack with 14 kills, and Velasque was not far behind with 12 kills on a very efficient hitting percentage of .545. Meanwhile, Kalinowski totaled 28 assists while also leading her team with nine digs. 

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they travel to face Grand Valley State with the first serve scheduled for 4 p.m.
