Cote and Whip Earn Strong Singles Victories; Lakers Fall to Timberwolves 5-2

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis program (0-2) fell on the road to former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival, the Northwood Timberwolves (1-1) by a final score of 5-2 on Friday. 

The Timberwolves managed to get themselves off to an early 1-0 advantage after securing the doubles point with victories in all three doubles matches. Marilou Cote (Levis, Quebec) and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) fell by a score of 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles position, and the pairing Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) and Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles, Spain) fell by the same score in the No. 3 doubles match. Meanwhile, Northwood claimed the top doubles position by a score of 6-1 against Tayla Brasier (Brathurst, Australia) and Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia).

Cote got the Lakers off to a strong start in singles play, winning her match at the top singles position by a final score of 6-2, 6-4, and Whip came away with the second victory of the day for the Lakers with a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 [17-15] win in the No. 2 singles match after a marathon of a third set super-tiebreaker that was played in lieu of a full third set. However, the Timberwolves were able to claim all four of the remaining singles matches in straight sets to secure the overall victory as a team.

Brasier fell in the No. 3 singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to Northwood's Danijela Danilovic who entered the season as the No. 20 ranked player in the region, and Parodi was defeated in the fourth singles match by a final score of 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, Fraile fell by a score of 7-6, 6-3 despite forcing a tiebreaker to narrowly decide the opening set of the No. 5 singles match by two points, and Oviedo was defeated in the sixth singles match by a mark of 6-2, 6-2.

The Lakers will travel to Southfield, Mich. in search of their first victory of the season when they take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Saturday, Feb. 11 with the first serve scheduled for 4 p.m.
