Laker Hockey Falls to St. Thomas 2-1 Despite Senior Day Heroics from Boudon

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich, - The Lake Superior State University hockey program (7-23-2, 6-17-1 CCHA) narrowly fell to the Saint Thomas Tommies (10-20-2, 9-13-2 CCHA) despite creating several quality chances on Saturday.

Lucas Wahlin opened up the scoring for the Tommies just under seven minutes into the contest. The Lakers kept fighting, and Jake Willets (Monroe, Mich.) nearly tied up the game late in the opening period off of a rebound off the pipe from Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.). However, the goal was waived off due to the officials losing sight of the puck prior to the loose puck being fired back toward the net, sending the Lakers into the first intermission trailing 1-0.

The defenses would then rise to the occasion throughout the second 20 minutes of action as both teams were able to hold each other scoreless during the period.

Trevor Zins was able to capitalize on a power play opportunity to put St. Thomas up 2-0, but a few minutes later at the 5:25 mark of the third period, senior captain Louis Boudon (Grenoble, France) brought the Lakers back to within one with a power play goal of his own after receiving assists from Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) and Jacob Bengtsson (Stockholm, Sweden). However, despite creating multiple opportunities to tie the game, the Tommies were able to hold on to secure the series split by a final score of 2-1.

Despite the loss, Boudon was named the second star of the game after scoring the Lakers' lone goal of the night while also blocking three shots defensively. Meanwhile, senior Seth Eisele (Lake Elmo, Mich.) was able to stop 25 shots between the pipes as the Lakers outshot the Tommies 31-27.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Feb. 24 when they travel to Ferris State for the final series of the regular season with puck drop for game one scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
