Preview: Laker Hockey Set to Host St. Thomas in Final Home Series of the Season

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich, - The Lake Superior State University hockey program (6-22-2, 5-16-1 CCHA) is set to host the St. Thomas Tommies in their final home series of the 2022-23 season with puck drop of game one scheduled for 7:07 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17. In addition, seniors will be honored prior to the Saturday contest, and there will be a moment of silence in recognition of the late Paul Jerrard prior to Friday's game.

Stories to watch:

  • The Lakers lead the all-time series 4-3, including three regular season victories in the Tommies' first season as a division I program. However, St. Thomas was able to get the better of the Lakers earlier this season, sweeping LSSU in Mendota Heights, Minn.

  • Both the Lakers and Tommies are coming off of a series split with the Northern Michigan Wildcats, and both teams will be battling for positioning in the CCHA standings to determine their opponents in the Mason Cup Quarterfinals.

  • 2023 has proven to be the year of Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) as the forward has accumulated seven goals since the turn of the calendar year to take the team lead in goals scored (10).

  • Jared Kucharek (Royal Oak, Mich.) appeared in the 100th game of his collegiate career in his previous outing at Northern Michigan.

  • The Tommies are led by a pair of 20-point scorers in Mack Byers and rookie Josh Eernisse, with the latter having scored three goals in the previous series against the Lakers, including both game-winners.

  • Artyom Borshyov (Vitebsk, Belarus) scored the first goal of his collegiate career in a 4-2 victory over Northern Michigan on Feb. 3 that turned out to be the game-winner.

  • Six different Lakers have recorded at least ten points entering the series against St. Thomas, led by Jacob Bengtsson (Stockholm, Sweden) with 19 (1G, 18A).

  • Bengtsson is currently leading LSSU in assists this season with 18.

  • Roy leads the team in goals so far this season with ten after scoring a pair, including the game-winner with 13.3 seconds remaining in regulation, in a 3-2 victory over Bemidji State on Jan. 28.
