Preview: Lakers Head to Michigan Tech for First Road Series of the Season

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University hockey program is set for their first official road trip of the season when they travel to Houghton, Mich. to take on the Huskies of Michigan Tech in a two-game series with both teams seeking to move up in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) standings. The first puck drop of game one is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:07 p.m.

Stories to watch:

  • The Lakers are 28-53-8 in the all-time series against Michigan Tech.
  • Both teams have already had a brief glimpse at each other having faced off in an exhibition contest on Oct. 1 in which the Huskies won 5-2 with the Lakers having goals scored by Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) and Artyom Borshyov (Vitebsk, Belarus).
  • Senior Captain Louis Boudon (Grenoble, France) enters the series two points shy of 100 for his career. Boudon leads the Lakers in points so far this season with seven (4G, 3A).
  • Roy emphatically announced his return from the injury list, scoring a goal in each game he has played since his return.
  • Michigan Tech boasts the October CCHA Goaltender of the Month in Blake Pietila after he led all CCHA goaltenders in save percentage (.944), goals-against average (1.51), and wins (4). His three shutouts are also the top mark nationally.
  • The Huskies have one of the best penalty kill units in the CCHA, fending off 87.5% of their opponents' power play opportunities, but Bowling Green was able to break this trend in the Huskies' most recent contest with three goals scored on the power play in a 6-1 win for the Falcons.
  • Despite the Huskies' successes so far this season, they have not fared as well against league opponents with a 1-2-1 mark in conference play while also having an additional loss against Ferris State on Oct. 7 on their record that does not count toward CCHA standings.
  • Both teams ender the series near the bottom of the CCHA standings, and they will be looking to bounce back this weekend.

The 2022-23 season so far:

  • The Lakers opened the regular season with a home series against Nebraska-Omaha. In the second game of the series, nine different Lakers scored a point, and three stops by Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) paired with a made attempt from Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) preserved a shootout victory on Oct. 15.
  • Sophomore forward Jordan Venegoni scored the first goal of his collegiate career against then No. 5 Michigan on Oct. 21.
  • Freshman forward Connor Milburn earned his first career points in an overtime loss to Clarkson, including scoring the game-tying goal with 1.7 seconds remaining to force overtime.
  • The Lakers earned their first official win of the season on Oct. 29 after Boudon iced the game away with a shorthanded empty-net goal to secure the 5-1 victory.
  • Goaltender Langenegger earned his first career point with a forward pass for a power play goal against Clarkson.
  • Boudon was named CCHA Forward of the Week following a four-point weekend against the Golden Knights.
  • The Lakers fell in both games against Northern Michigan to open CCHA play, but Roy announced his return from injury with a goal in each contest.
