Preview: Cross Country Ready to Open the 2021 Season at WSU's Warrior Challenge

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2021 campaign this Friday, Sept. 10 as they compete in Wayne State's Warrior Challenge at Willow Metropark in New Boston, Mich.

The women's 6,000 meter race will start at 5:30 p.m. while the men's 8,000 meter competition will follow with a 6:15 p.m. start time. The course is a 2k loop that is mostly flat with one hill per loop and almost exclusively grass with excellent footing.

Following the cancellation of the fall 2020 cross country season, the Lakers are made up of a very young roster on both the men's and women's teams. The men's team will be led by three seniors including David Mitter, who competed at the Division II Cross Country Championships in 2018 and has been twice named First Team All-GLIAC. The women's team will look to the leadership of senior Leah Bell as she leads the otherwise all freshman roster.

"It's great to be back out on the courses for cross country!", said Head Coach Rob Gallinger. "We really missed competing last year and are excited to be back running this season. It's a very young team with only three athletes that have run a collegiate meet before but I really like the group we have and the work they are putting into the season."

Results will be available here.
