Lakers Travel for a Pair of GLIAC Matches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State University women's volleyball team will resume Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this weekend Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5 as they hit the road for a pair of games. The Lakers will match up against the Ashland University Eagles first in Ashland, Ohio at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and then close out the weekend against the Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Lake Superior State has a 4-9 overall record through 13 games and a 1-4 conference record.

Preview

The Lakers will spend their second weekend in a row on the road, with a rare Tuesday night home match played in between. Lake State hosted Saginaw at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1 where despite a very hard-fought effort from the Lakers, they fell in three sets to the Cardinals. The Lakers will look to build off of their previous success on the road as they defeated Northern Michigan last weekend to record their first conference road victory of the 2019 season.  With that win, Lake State has already surpassed last season's road win total as the team did not register a win in a road game during the 2018 season. Additionally, the Lakers can tie their season win total as well as their conference win total from last season with a win this weekend.

Ashland sits atop both the GLIAC South Division and full conference GLIAC standings with a 13-2 overall record in 15 games total and are a perfect 5-0 in conference matches. The Eagles are currently in the midst of an eight game win streak. Wayne State sits in second place in the South Division standings with a 2-3 conference record and a 7-6 overall total. The Warriors will take on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Friday night.

Lakers Player to Watch - Jr. Sarah Bailey

Bailey, an outside hitter, is tied for second among all Lakers with 74 kills this season as her solid play has stood out during recent Laker matches. The Drummond Island, Mich. native is one of four upperclassmen on the team and her leadership on the court has been relied upon as she is one of five Lakers to appear in 40 or more sets this season. The junior has recorded 12 kills in a game on three occasions this seasons, including the Lakers most recent game against Saginaw Valley.
