Lakers Set for a Pair of Road GLIAC Matches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State University women's volleyball team will be back in action this weekend with games on Friday, Sept. 27 in Marquette, Mich against their Great Lakes Athletic Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) rival Northern Michigan Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28 when they match up against the GLIAC leading Michigan Tech Huskies in Houghton, Mich. at 4:00 p.m. Through the first ten games of the season, the Lakers have posted a 3-7 overall record and are 0-2 in conference play.

Last weekend, the Lakers opened up GLIAC conference play with back-to-back home games against the No. 10 ranked Ferris State Bulldogs and Northwood Timberwolves. Lake State will continue conference play this weekend on the road as they look to clinch their first GLIAC victory of the season. Northern Michigan carries a 5-6 overall record and a 2-1 mark in conference games. The Wildcats were on a three game winning streak that was snapped in their last game following a three set loss to Michigan Tech. The Huskies of Michigan Tech head into the weekend riding a four-game winning streak, with three of the four games being three set victories. Michigan Tech will host Saginaw Valley on Friday at home before playing the Lakers on Saturday afternoon.

Lakers Player to Watch

So. Halle Grulke - Grulke, a has been consistently setting up her team to score this season. The Hustisford, Wis. native leads the Lakers with 235 assists and has appeared in all ten games that the Lakers have played this season. The sophomore ranks eighth in the GLIAC with 235 assists and ninth in the conference with 7.83 assists per set. 

Wildcats Player to Watch

So. Lizzy Stark - Stark, an outside hitter, has been leading the way for the Wildcats offense this season with team-high 162 kills in 11 games, which ranks second among all players in the GLIAC. The Minneapolis, Minn. native ranks first among her teammates in kills per set (3.77) while ranking second on the Wildcats with 111 digs this season. 

Huskies Player to Watch

Jr. Laura De Marchi - De Marchi, a setter, was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week on Sept. 23 as she led the Huskies with 89 assists in a pair of games against Davenport and Grand Valley State. The Milan, Italy native heads into the weekend ranking second in the GLIAC in assists per set (11.50) and third nationally in career assists per set (11.67).

Up Next

Lake Superior will continue GLIAC play as the team hosts the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State University on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
