Lakers Drop Four-Set Match to Northwood

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's volleyball team closed out its first weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a four set loss against the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Lakers record moves to 3-7 overall, 0-2 in GLIAC play through 10 games.

The Lakers took an early lead in the first set, holding a 15-9 lead at one point. The Timberwolves made a late push in the opening set to claim the first set by a score of 25-22. 

The second set saw the two rivals exchange points through the beginning of play with Northwood and Lake State tied at nine points apiece. The score remained tight through the rest of the set with the Timberwolves reaching the 20-point mark while the Lakers were at 18 points. Northwood went on a point run to eventually take the second set 25-19. 

In the third set of the match, the Lakers and Northwood once again exchanged points for most of the set. The Lakers took the lead towards the middle of the set (18-14) but a late rally by the Timberwolves tightened the score to 23-21. The Lakers would hold off Northwood by clinching the third set by a score of 25-21.

The fourth set saw the Lakers take an early 6-2 lead before the Timberwolves came back to even the score at six. From there, the two teams exchanged points through the middle portion of the set. Eventually, the Timberwolves went on a streak to close out the set, and match, by a score of 25-19.

The Lakers were led offensively by senior outside hitter, Amanda Reid, who recorded a team-leading 13 kills in the match. She also recorded 11 digs against Northwood. Sophomores Camdyn Odykirk and Bethany Wilson each had solid appearances for the Lakers as they each had eight kills in the game. Junior Sarah Bailey had seven kills for the Lakers, and redshirt freshman Nina White had six kills. 

Sophomore Halle Grulke had 7 digs and 26 assists in the game as the Lakers setter through three sets while freshman setter Emily Kalinowski had eight assists in one set appearance. 

Sophomore libero Abby Beachnau led the team with 19 digs through four sets. 

Up Next

The Lakers will travel to Marquette and Houghton MI, to face the Northern Michigan Wildcats and the #21 Michigan Tech Huskies. The game against Northern Michigan (3-5) will take place on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 pm. The game against the Huskies (5-3) will be at 4:00 pm on Saturday, Sept. 28.
