Volleyball takes on NMU in final home matches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – In the final home games of the 2017 season, the Lake Superior State volleyball team will face Upper Peninsula rivals Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech this weekend in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.  Both games are at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on the campus of Lake State.

The Lakers (3-17, 1-10 GLIAC) come into the weekend after dropping matches on the road against conference foes Grand Valley and Wayne State.  Against Grand Valley, Lake Superior took the first set before Grand Valley rallied to win the next three sets.  In the match against Wayne State, the Lakers could not overcome a strong defense and were unable to reach the 20 point mark in any of the sets, as the Warriors downed Lake Superior in straight sets.

The Lakers have been led this year by senior Brooke Williams (208.5 points) and sophomore Amanda Reid (189.5 points), who have averaged 3.1 and 3.0 points per set respectively.  Paige Gotham has 384 digs on the year, followed by Reid, with 206.  As a team, Lake Superior has a .130 hitting percentage

Senior Karlee Weissend leads Lake Superior in blocks with 46 (1 solo) and 0.85 blocks per set.  Sophomore Caitlyn Kane has 6 solo blocks and averages 0.76 blocks per set.

Northern Michigan (16-6, 8-3 GLIAC) and Michigan Tech (14-8, 8-3 GLIAC) come into the weekend after defeating Davenport and Purdue Northwest.  Both the Wildcats and Huskies downed the Panthers and Pride in straight sets.

The match against the Wildcats is on Friday, October 27th at 7 p.m., while first serve against the Huskies is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 28th.  Tickets for Friday and Saturday can be purchased at the Norris Center ticket office or by going to lssulakers.com/tickets.
