Laker Volleyball downed by Grand Valley 3-1

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State volleyball team travelled downstate for a matchup against the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's other Laker team, Grand Valley State.  Aided by a .222 attack percentage, the GV Lakers (11-10, 6-4 GLIAC) came back from a 1-0 set deficit to defeat the Soo Lakers (3-16, 1-9 GLIAC) 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-11, 25-17).

After Grand Valley pulling ahead 16-15 in the first set, Lake Superior went on a 5 point run, which started off with a kill by Amanda Reid.  An attack error by GV's Jayci Suseland put Lake State up 20-16, a lead which held right up to an Elizabeth Ballor kill to win Lake Superior set number one, 25-21.

In the second set, back to back scoring runs by both Laker teams kept things close through much of the set.  After a kill from Reid to make the score 19-16 in favor of the home team, however, Grand Valley reeled off six straight points to claim the second set by a 25-16 score, knotting the contest at one set each.

Lake Superior was plagued by a big run by Grand Valley early in the third set.  After Kyra Vezina earned a kill to put Lake State up 2-1, Grand Valley went on a 10 point run.  LSSU's Ballor earned another kill, but Grand Valley was up 11-3 by this point.  While Lake Superior made an attempt at closing the gap, the early deficit proved too much to overcome, as two more runs by GVSU (a four point and a six point) led them to a 25-11 set victory.  In attack percentage, Grand Valley put up a .407 for the set.

In set number four, Grand Valley jumped out to an early 7-3 lead.  Lake Superior fought back, closing within one point of the host three times.  Each time, however, Grand Valley kept Lake State from tying the set.  A five point scoring run by Grand Valley made the score 21-14 – a score which Lake Superior could not close the gap on en route to a 25-17 loss for Lake Superior.

Lake Superior was led by Reid with 12 kills and Ballor with 10.  Paige Gotham had 16 digs for Lake State, while Reid had 13 of her own.

Leading Grand Valley was Staci Brower, who had 13 kills and 17.5 points.  Katie Olson had 25 assists

Lake State is in action on Saturday, October 21st at Wayne State.  The Warriors (12-9, 7-3 GLIAC) are coming off of a 3-0 win against Saginaw Valley State.  First serve is at 2 p.m. on the Wayne State campus in Detroit.
