Volleyball falls to Truman State in Midwest Region Crossover

AURORA, Ill. – The Lake Superior State volleyball team fell in their first game of the Midwest Region Crossover against the Truman State Bulldogs 3-0 on Friday, October 13th.  The Lakers (2-14, 1-8 GLIAC) fell to the Bulldogs from the Great Lakes Valley Conference in straight sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-22).

There were runs aplenty in the first set, as Truman State (8-11, 3-6 GLVC) rattled off the first three points of the set.  The Lakers responded with a 4-1 run of their own to tie things up.  Another run for each team put the score at 12-11 in favor of the Bulldogs.  Unfortunately for Lake Superior, they were unable to respond to Truman State's next run, as the 17-11 lead the Bulldogs built up was too much.  After an attack error by the Bulldogs' Sam Yancy, Truman State ended the set on an 8-1 run, collecting their final point on a service ace.

In the second set, another run to start by Truman State was answered by the Lakers, as things stayed close through the early going.  Gradually, the Bulldogs pulled away from Lake Superior, as the Lakers were unable to answer point for point.  A five point run by the 'Dogs made it 21-14 in favor of Truman State.  From there, the Lakers managed to go point for point against their foes, but could not gain any ground, ultimately falling 25-18.

Starting off the third set on the right note, Lake Superior scored four of the first five points, including one on a service ace by Lauren Lukasik.  A five point run from the Bulldogs put them ahead 6-5.  From that point, the teams traded points for a lengthy stretch.  A kill by Kyra Vezina made it 19-18 in favor of Truman State.  With Truman State earning five of the next six points, the Lakers were on the brink.  Although they scored the next three points to close the gap, they were unable to prevent a kill by Ellie Kaat, which sealed the deal for the Bulldogs, as they were victorious 25-22.

Statistically, the Lakers were led by Brooke Williams with 9.5 points, followed by Vezina with 8.  Madison Castle had 13 assists and Lukasik had 12.  Paige Gotham led the Lakers with 11 digs.

Truman State was led by Jasmine Brown, who had 15.5 points.  Savvy Hughes sported 29 assists, while Lauren Wacker had 16 digs.  As a team, the Bulldogs sported a .261 kill percentage, as opposed to the Lakers, who had a .087 in that category.

The Lakers are back in action on Saturday, October 14th, when they take on the Missouri S&T Miners and the Ohio Dominican Panthers in a doubleheader.  The match against the Miners, also of the GLVC,  starts at 11 a.m., while first serve for the Panthers, a former GLIAC foe who now plays in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC), is at 5 p.m.
