Volleyball falls in four sets at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Lake Superior State volleyball fell to Hillsdale College in four sets on the road Saturday in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

The teams played to three consecutive 26-24 scores in the opening two sets, with Hillsdale claiming each of the first two sets. The Lakers (3-21, 0-12 GLIAC) responded in the third set with their own victory to force a fourth set.

The Chargers (14-9, 6-6 GLIAC) rolled in the fourth set, 25-11 over LSSU, with 14 kills and just one attacking error. The Lakers offense stalled in the fourth set, totaling 10 kills but committing 10 errors.

In winning the third set the Lakers posted 13 kills and only two errors for a .333 attack percentage.

Freshman Amanda Reid led the LSSU attack with 11 kills on 42 attempts. Karlee Weissend was perhaps the most effective attacker for the Lakers, scoring nine kills and only committing two errors in 17 attempts (.412 attack percentage).  Weissend also tallied a solo block and assisted on five other blocks to finish with 12.5 points.

Jena Tulgestke finished third on the team with eight kills on 24 attempts, and juniors Elizabeth Ballor and Brooke Williams each added six kills.

LSSU setters Lauren Lukasik totaled 21 assists and Madison Castle accounted for 18 assists. Defensively, junior Justice Kjolhede was busy with 22 digs.

Erin Holsinger led Hillsdale with a match-high 17 kills. The Chargers finished with 59 kills (.205) and the Lakers scored 47 kills (.141).

The Lakers return home Tuesday (Nov. 1) for a 4:00 p.m. match against Hillsdale College.
