SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- Behind an impressive .333 attacking percentage and terrific defense, Lake Superior State volleyball defeated NCAA Division III member Finlandia, 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-20) on Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The victory improves the Lakers to 3-19 overall on the season and is the team's first win at home since Sept. 27, 2014.

The Lakers were led by junior Brooke Williams' match-high 12 kills and 13.5 points. Williams also tallied one of two solo blocks by the Lakers defense and assisted on another block. The Montrose, Mich., native was 16-for-19 on her attacks and was without an error (.632 pct.).

Overall, LSSU combined for 32 kills and had nine total team blocks. The Lakers were also able to generate 12 service aces in the match, led by freshman Amanda Reid's four aces and Karlee Weissend and Mikala Williams each adding three.

Junior setter Madison Castle led the Lakers with 14 assists and also had six digs to finish third on the team in digs behind Justice Kjolhede (8) and Mikala Williams (7).

Katelyn Anderson led the Lions (9-20) with eight kills, as Finlandia totaled just 24 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Nicole Anderson led the Lions with a match-high 15 assists.

The Lions struggled offensively during the first-two sets, which helped the Lakers cruise to easy set victories. Finlandia totaled 15 kills and 17 errors through the first two frames.

Finlandia produced a stronger effort in the third set, scoring nine kills and only committing six attack errors, but the Lakers were up to the task and dispatched the Lions in the third while rotating in a pair of reserves.

LSSU returns to great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, traveling to Northwood on Oct. 28 and at Hillsdale on Oct. 29.
