Lakers fall in marathon five-set match against Walsh

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State volleyball took Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Walsh University to five sets before eventually falling 15-13 in the final set on Friday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers (2-19, 0-10 GLIAC) claimed the first and second sets, 25-21 and 25-15, respectively. However, the Cavaliers (8-12, 2-7 GLIAC) stormed back to claim the final three sets 25-16, 25-14 and 15-13.

In the fifth and final set, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 5-2 lead before the Lakers stormed back with three-straight points to tie the set. Both sides exchanged points to a 10-10 tie before the Cavaliers went on their own 3-to-0 run to lead 13-10. LSSU brought the score to 14-13, but Paola Ferrario capped the match with her 10th kill to give Walsh the victory.

Walsh's offense combined for 52 kills in the match and produced a .171 attack percentage. LSSU countered with 39 kills, but 28 errors held the Lakers to a .072 attack percentage.

The match featured 14 lead changes and 20 times the score was tied.

Gina Kramer and Lauren Loucks led the Cavaliers with a match-high 17 kills, each. Setter Haley Howell led Walsh with a match-high 28 assists.

LSSU received eight kills from both sophomore Jena Tulgestke and freshman Amanda Reid. Brooke Williams also tallied seven kills for the Lakers. Madison Castle led the Lakers with 14 assists.

LSSU is back at home again on Saturday to close the weekend home stand. The Lakers face NCAA Division III Finlandia at 2 p.m. inside Cooper Gymnasium.
