Lakers suffer home loss against Tiffin, 3-0

SAULT STE. MARIE- Lake Superior State volleyball fell 3-0 in defeat at Cooper Gymnasium Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1) against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Tiffin. The Dragons (9-6, 3-4 GLIAC) never trailed during the match, claiming the first set 25-16 and the second set 25-14 before a tight 25-19 victory in the final set.

The Lakers (1-14, 0-7 GLIAC) were able to produce a more effective attack compared to Friday's 3-0 loss against Ashland but struggled to defend an effective Tiffin attack. LSSU combined for just three team blocks, compared to Tiffin's seven blocks. The Dragons also edged the Lakers in digs 31-24.

Offensively the Lakers mustered just a .067 attack percentage on the match with 28 kills and 22 errors on 90 attempts. From the other side the Dragons combined for 41 kills, just 12 errors and .363 attack percentage on their 80 attempts. Tiffin also held a sideout advantage of 68 percent over 45 percent for LSSU.

Freshman Amanda Reid led the Lakers with eight kills and tied junior Justice Kjolhede four digs defensively to rank second on the team. Junior Brooke Williams added seven kills and assisted on two of the team's blocks. Madison Castled led LSSU with 12 assists, followed by Lauren Lukasik with 11.

The Dragons were led by Olivia Cobb and Kasey Adelsperger with eight kills each. Setter Emily Weithman totaled 31 assists to lead Tiffin.

The Lakers hit the road next weekend to face Lake Erie at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 and Ohio Dominican at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. The following weekend the Lakers are set to play three undetermined opponents at the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover in Aurora, Ill., Oct. 14-15.
