Laker Women's Tennis Fall at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's tennis team (5-9, 3-3 GLIAC) fell to the Grand Valley State (GVSU) Lakers (9-8, 3-2 GLIAC) by a final score of 7-0 on Saturday.

GVSU was able to claim the early 1-0 lead after doubles play, but LSSU would make them earn every point, taking at least three games in all three matches. Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia) and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) pushed their opponents to a 6-4 margin, and the duo of Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) and Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) fought their way to a 5-5 stalemate before ultimately falling 7-5.

Despite the loss, LSSU was still able to produce multiple strong efforts on the day. Whip battled the reigning GLIAC Player of the Year, Vasileva Griva, to a highly-competitive 7-5, 7-6(2) decision in the No. 1 singles match, and Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) forced a third set after taking her second by a margin of 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Then, in the No. 5 singles match, the senior Fraile went back-and-forth with her opponent, narrowly dropping the first set 7-5 before knotting the match up at one set each by taking the second 6-4. However, GVSU was ultimately able to survive in the match by the narrowest of margins, taking the super-tiebreaker by a score of 10-8.

LSSU will look to bounce back when they conclude the regular season at Ferris State on Saturday, April 20 with the first serve scheduled for 10 a.m.
