Laker Women's Tennis Shows Competitive Effort Against DI Oakland

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's tennis team (1-2) fell to the NCAA Division I Oakland University Golden Grizzlies (2-4) by a final score of 6-1 on Saturday despite strong singles performances from Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) and Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia) with each pushing their opponents to a third set.

The Golden Grizzlies were able secure the doubles point with a pair of victories at the top two spots, but the duo of Fraile and Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) were putting together a competitive match before it was left unfinished at a score of 2-3.

In singles play, Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia), Trinity Ly (Toronto, Ont.), and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) all put together competitive outings, taking at least four games each before ultimately falling in straight sets.

Whip came out of the gate strong at the No. 4 spot with a dominant 6-0 victory in the first set, but her opponent battled back to take the second by a narrow 6-4 margin. However, Oakland's Hultqvist would eventually come out on top in the ten-point super tiebreaker for the match.

Then, at the No. 5 singles position, after dropping the opening set 6-3, Fraile battled back to take control of the second by a score of 6-2. It would all come down to a super tiebreaker, but after both competitors went back and forth, Fraile was able to secure the last few points that she needed to take the match 3-6, 6-2, [10-7] to remain undefeated in singles as an individual on the season in dual match play.
