SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis program (1-11, 0-4 GLIAC) fell to the No. 13 Wayne State Warriors (14-3, 2-1 GLIAC) despite true freshman Marilou Cote (Levis, Quebec) defeating the No. 25 ranked player in NCAA Division II on Friday.
The Warriors would get off to a quick start in doubles play with wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 spots. Cote and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) would compete well against the No. 41 ranked doubles team in the nation, but they too would ultimately fall by a final score of 6-4.
Wayne State would then extend their lead to 2-0 after a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina), but the Lakers would answer right back as Cote secured the biggest win of her collegiate career, taking down the No. 25 player in the nation in Wayne State's Anais Ruyssen. However, despite strong efforts from Parodi and Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles) in which Parodi forced a tiebreaker in the second set and Fraile won her first set by a score of 6-3, the Warriors would take both matches to secure the 4-1 victory overall.
With the match already decided, the remaining matches for Riley Gilman (Holt, Mich.) and the collegiate debut of Madelin Harrod (Troy, Mich.) were left unfinished.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they travel to take on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals with the first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
