Women's Tennis Falls in a Close Match Against Wayne State, 4-3

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to the Wayne State Warriors on Monday, April 12 by a final score of 4-3 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match in the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste Marie, Mich. Through the first seven matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 2-5 overall record and a 1-4 record in conference play.

In doubles play, Lake Superior State fell to the Warriors in each of the three matches to drop the match's opening point to the visiting team. 

The Lakers and the Warriors played six competitive matches in singles play with each team recording three victories. The Lakers won the No. 2, 3 and 4 matches while the Warriors sealed the win after taking the No. 1, 5 and 6 matches. 

Milena Baigorria, playing in the No. 2 spot for the Lakers, won her match against Suki Mandair in two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-4. The Lakers No. 3 player, Muskaan Ranjan, won her match in three sets. Ranjan dropped the first set 6-3 but rallied to take the next two sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-4 to secure the match win. In the No. 4 singles match, LSSU's Claudia Sole would also earn a match win in three sets as she won the first set in a tiebreaker. Sole fell in the second set but would record a 6-1 win in the third set to give the Lakers three victories in singles play. 

Nadege Koua, the Lakers No. 1 singles player, fell in two sets to Wayne State's Linda Liong. The Lakers No. 5 player, Keegan Malpass, and the No. 6 player, Julia Fraile Raton, each fell in two sets to their Warrior opponent. 

Looking Ahead

The Lakers will continue conference play during their week-long homestand on Friday, April 16 against the Ferris State Bulldogs at 9:00 a.m. in the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
