SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team defeated Northwood University for the first in over ten years on Sunday, Oct. 6 in the Arbuckle Student Activity Center by a score of 4-3. The Lakers, led by Head Coach Luke Ogren, saw their win total double this weekend as the team now holds a 2-3 overall record in overall play and conference play. 

"It was a great all-around team effort. I am so proud of the fight I have seen from this team. The energy from all of them on and off the court made a huge difference this weekend," said Ogren. 

The Laker started the match off strong as the Lakers top two doubles pairs won their matches to give LSSU the doubles point, which would help lead them to their win over the Timberwolves. 

Singles play was very competitive with half of the matches played needing three sets to determine the winner. No. 1 single junior AlexiAnn Drouin and No. 2 sophomore Nadege Koua each dropped the initial set before responding with consecutive wins to clinch their matches. No. 3 singles player for the Lakers, junior Muskaan Ranjan, won her match in two sets to give the Lakers the deciding point against their conference opponent for the win. 

The Lakers No. 4 singles athlete, sophomore Keegan Malpass, played a strong match for the Lakers as she fell in the tiebreaker of the decisive third set. Riley Gilman, the Lakers No. 5 singles player, and Madelin Harrod, in the No. 6 spot, were each defeated in two sets.

The Lakers will look to continue their strong play next weekend as they travel for a pair of games against GLIAC rivals. First, the Lakers will compete against the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 12 and close out the weekend against Grand Valley State University.
