Women's tennis topples Alma 9-0

ALMA, Mich. – Lake Superior State women's tennis cruised to their first 9-0 victory of the season in defeating Alma College on Sunday by sweeping the three doubles matches and winning all six singles matches in straight sets. The victory over the Scots marked the second victory of the weekend for LSSU after claiming a 7-2 victory at Lawrence Tech on Saturday.

The Lakers improved to a 6-8 record on the season with the victory and were led into the match by sophomore Tara Harvey in the No. 1 singles and the top doubles positions. Harvey began the match with a doubles victory over Claudia Barajas and Caroline Ross, 8-0, alongside partner Macarena Bielsa. Harvey also won 6-1 and 6-2 over Barajas in the first match of the singles portion.

Bielsa, a junior from Madrid, Spain, was the only Lakers player to win in with consecutive 6-0, 6-0 shutouts over Matilda Ennis in No. 3 singles

The pairing of Laura Roberts and Jenay Andrews followed up Harvey and Bielsa with an 8-3 victory over Ennis and Bernadette Garibay in No. 2 doubles prior to each also claiming solo wins. Roberts topped Ross in No. 2 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-0 and Andrews picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jessica Penhale in No. 5 singles.

Following a victory over Chloe Ramsey and Amy Wood in No. 3 doubles to sweep the opening portion, Laura Fernandez and Allison Grandfield remained unbeaten on the day with solo victories. Fernandez won 6-0, 6-2 over Ramsey and Grandfield stopped Garibay 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth and final singles match.

The women's tennis team concludes the 2016-17 season on March 1, at Lewis University.
