Women's tennis holds court at home, drop Findlay 7-2

SAULT STE. MARIE- Lake Superior State women's tennis defeated Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals Findlay by a 7-2 decision in Saturday's (Oct. 15) dual match.

The Lakers (4-6, 3-6 GLIAC) earned a sweep in doubles play to lead 3-0 after the morning's opening session. Tara Harvey and Jenay Andrews combined for an 8-2 victory in the top pairing, followed by a 9-8 (4) victory for Laura Fernandez and Macarena Bielsa, and an 8-3 win by Laura Roberts and Allison Grandfield in No. 3 doubles.

Fernandez and Bielsa moved to 4-3 overall as doubles partners with the victory.

Harvey opened the singles portion with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Matina Matic to put the Lakers ahead 4-0. After a pair of singles victories for the Oilers (2-8, 1-8 GLIAC) in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, LSSU rattled off three-straight victories to round out the 7-2 win.

In No. 4 singles Laura Fernandez won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over Mikaela Hindenlang, followed by Jenay Andrews improving her singles record to 5-5 with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 over Kaylee Davis in No. 5 singles.

Wrapping up the match, Allison Grandfield defeated Kristi McDonald 6-2, 6-2.

The Lakers conclude Great Lake State Weekend at home on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. with a match against Tiffin.
