LSSU women's tennis falls 9-0 at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.- Lake Superior State women's tennis opened the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday with a 9-0 loss at Ferris State.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC) avenged a close 5-4 defeat against Michigan Tech on Friday with the sweep of the Lakers, who move to 0-1 on the season.

Sophomores Tara Harvey and Jenay Andrews teamed up in the No. 1 doubles position, losing 8-5 in a close match against the top FSU pairing of Teodora Stefanovic and Nika Hein. Sophomore Allison Grandfield and junior newcomer Macarena Bielsa fell 8-2 in No. 2 doubles. Senior Laura Roberts and sophomore Kirsten Malpass fell 8-4 in the third doubls slot.

Bielsa was the only Lakers player not to lose in straight sets during the singles portion. The Madrid, Spain native earned a 6-2 fist-set victory before falling 6-2, 10-5 against Amiena Houston in No. 3 singles.

The Lakers close the weekend with a GLIAC match against Grand Valley State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
