Lakers come up short against the Oilers, fall 5-4

FINDLAY, Ohio - Lake Superior State women's tennis team came up shy of picking up their first team-win of the season against the Findlay Oilers. The Lakers fell to 0-11 overall and 0-10 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play fell 5-4 to the Oilers (1-9, 1-9 GLIAC) in the weekend finale.

The Lakers opened the match with a 2-1 defecit following the doubles portion, with the Oilers capturing No. 1 and No. 2 doubles wins.

A freshman duo of Kirsten Malpass and Allison Grandfield scored the Lakers a doubles victory in the No. 3 slot. Malpass and Grandfield were able to defeat the pairing of Anna Foreman and Lindsay Jurcenko 8-4.

The teams split the singles portion and the Oilers were able to capture the five victories needed to win the match.

Senior Sarah Awe rebounded from an opening-set loss to score a three-set victory over Matina Matic 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Awe improved her singles record to 5-6 on the season.

Freshman Tara Harvey came close to giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead after the No. 2 singles match. Harvey fell to Tijana Raicevic after capturing the first set 6-4. Raicevic came back and took the final two sets 6-1, 7-6.

Laura Roberts brought the match to a tie at 3-3 with a three-set victory over Viktoriya Shkola. Roberts defeated Shkola 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The Oilers finished their first victory of the season with decisive wins in the fourth and fifth singles slots.

Freshman Allison Grandfield claimed her third singles win in her collegiate career with a No. 6 singles victory over Kymberlyn Warner. Grandfield won sure-handedly 6-1, 6-3.

The Lakers' next match will be against Upper Peninsula rivals Michigan Tech (2-8, 2-8 GLIAC) on Friday in Houghton. The match will mark the last for the Lakers' 2015 fall GLIAC season.
