Awe collects singles and doubles victories on senior day, Lakers fall 7-2

SAULT STE. MARIE- Lake Superior State women's tennis player Sarah Awe collected wins in singles and doubles competition in her final home event as a Laker. The Lakers, however, fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference member Wayne State by a score of 7-2.

Awe, playing in her final match at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center, paired with Tara Harvey in No. 1 doubles to start the morning. Awe and Harvey combined to defeat Alex Poissant and Dasha Kuznetsova 8-6.

Laur Fernandez and Jenay Andrews suffered an 8-2 defeat at the hands of Ashley Walker and Lauren Hughes in No. 2 doubles, while Kristen Malpass and Allison Grandfield fen 8-3 to Liz Ghellere and Astrid Ciellza in No. 3 doubles.

Awe went toe-to-toe with Poissant in the No. 1 singles slot and came out victorious in a three-set 6-2,3-6, 6-1 match. Awe was able to improve her individual record to 4-5 in the No. 1 position this season.

The Lakers were unable to find much success elsewhere during the singles portion. Laura Roberts, playing No. 3 singles, played a close match with Julia Kamenko before losing 7-5, 7-5.

The Lakers will travel to Tiffin and Findlay next Saturday and Sunday Oct. 10-11.
