Freshmen shine but Lakers fall to Walsh 7-2

CANTON, Ohio - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team dropped it's third match of the season with a 7-2 loss at the hands of Walsh (2-2, 2-2 GLIAC) on Saturday. The Lakers (0-3, 0-3 GLIAC) picked up a singles win from Tara Harvey, the first of her career. Allison Grandfield and Kirsten Malpass also picked up their first victory as partners in the No. 3 doubles pairing.

Harvey, a native of Duns, Scotland, defeated Daria Bondareva in a thrilling three-set marathon 7-5, 2-6, 11-9. Senior Sarah Awe and sophomore Laura Fernandez both won five games in their second sets but were both overpowered by their counterparts.

Awe and freshman Jenay Andrews fell 8-4 in the top doubles tandem. The pairing of Harvey and Fernandez encountered the same fate with an 8-4 loss in No. 2 doubles. Grandfield and Malpass, teaming up for the first time in their careers, picked up the 8-3 vicotry over Gabriela Laguna-Leon and Arina Kravitz.

The Lakers wrap up their weekend with a match against Ashland on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
