Laker Golf Spring Season Continues at Weekday Road Tournaments

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's golf teams continued the spring season as both teams competed in tournaments on Monday, April 4 and Tuesday, April 5. The men's team participated in Wisconsin Parkside's Spring Invite at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind. while the women's team competed in the NC4K Classic at the Jefferson Country Club in Blacklick, Ohio. 

The men's team combined for a two-day total of 604 to finish tied for sixth place among the 10 participating teams. On the opening day of competition, the Laker men's squad recorded a score of 310 and posted a 299 mark following a strong team performance on the second day of the tournament. The women's team finished 17th out of 19 teams after posting a two-day score of 712. On the first day of the tournament, the Lakers combined for a score of 367 and followed with a score of 345 on the second day of competition. 

The men's team was led by junior Callum McKay who finished tied for ninth place among all participants with a two-day total of 147. McKay opened the tournament with a 73 and recorded a score of 74 on the second day of play. Freshman Grant Baker had another strong showing for the Lakers as he finished second among his Laker teammates and tied for 17th overall with a combined score of 149 (80-69). Baker's score of 69 on the second day of the tournament was the lowest score by any Laker at the competition. Freshman Marko Banic combined for a two-day total of 152 (77-75) to finish tied for 24th. Senior Zander Park recorded a score of 158 over the two days with an 82 the first day and a 76 on Tuesday. Freshman Alex Bratton rounded out the Laker team with a combined score of 161 (80-81). Freshman Gabe Rathburn, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 27th with a combined score of 153 (77-76).

For the second straight tournament, senior Alyshia Suleman led the women's team as finished with a two-day total of 169 to finish tied for 47th among all competitors. Suleman posted a score of 90 on the first day of the NC4K Tournament and followed with a 79 on Tuesday, which stood as the lowest score among all Lakers at the event. Junior Julia Vess followed with a combined score of 171. With a score of 84 on the first day and an 87 to close out the tournament, Vess finished tied for 52nd among all the golfers. Sophomore Marie Mathieu recorded a two-day score of 184 (94-90) while freshman Jesse Hellebuyck rounded out the Lakers with a combined score of 188 (99-89).
