Laker Golf Competes at the Klash in Kentucky

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's golf teams opened the spring season this weekend at the Klash in Kentucky tournament that was hosted by the Southwest Golf Academy and was held at the Perry Park Golf Resort in Perry Park, Ky. on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27. 

The men's team combined for a two-day total of 625 to finish in fourth place among the eight participating teams. On the opening day of competition, the Laker men's squad recorded a score of 311 and followed with a 314 mark on the second day of the tournament. The women's team finished sixth out of eight teams after posting a two-day score of 688. On the first day of the tournament, the Lakers combined for a score of 342 and followed with a score of 346 on the second day of competition. 

The men's team was led by freshman Grant Baker and junior Callum McKay as both finished in a tie for 10th overall among participants with two-day totals of 156. Baker shot a 77 on the first day of the tournament and followed with a 79 while McKay opened with a 76 and closed out the Klash in Kentucky with a day two score of 80. Freshman Marko Banic (82-75) and senior Zander Park (77-80) were tied for second on the team as each posted a two-day score of 157 to finish tied for 18th. Freshman Gabe Rathburn rounded out the Lakers top five finishers with a combined score of 167 (84-83). Freshman Alex Bratton followed with a 168 (81-87) and junior Collin Pajot completed the Laker participants with a combined score of 172 (81-91). 

Senior Alyshia Suleman led the women's team as she finished 14th among all tournament participants with a two-day score of 165. Suleman led her teammates on both days of competition as she opened with an 82 and shot an 83 on the final day of the two-day tournament. Sophomore Marie Mathieu and junior Julia Vess were tied for second among the Laker finishers, and tied for 26th overall after both posting combined scores of 173. Mathieu opened with an 89 on day one and responded with a score of 84 on the second day. Vess shot an 85 on the first day of competition and followed with an 88 to close out the tournament. Freshman Jesse Hellebuyck rounded out the Laker finishers as she combined for a score of 177 (86-91).

This weekend, the men's team will be competing at the Wisconsin-Parkside Spring Invite on April 4-5 at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind. The women's team will travel to Blacklick, Ohio to take part in ODU's NC4K Classic on April 4-5.
