SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Madison Wilkie has been named the female recipient of the 2019-20 Ronald "Bud" Cooper Coaches Trophy, as voted on by the LSSU head coaches.
The Ronald "Bud" Cooper Trophy is "awarded annually to a female athlete, who in the opinion of the coaches, has displayed outstanding qualities of citizenship, leadership, active campus participation, and has contributed significantly to the athletic program."
Wilkie, a business administration-marketing major from Raber, Mich., is a junior on the women's golf team. Despite not getting to compete in the spring season, the women's golf team put together an extremely impressive fall performance that was highlighted by a first place finish at the LTU Blue Devil Classic. The junior golfer finished tied for eighth place in the competition. Wilkie competed in every tournament for the Lakers and posted her lowest two day total at the SVSU Fall Invitational where she shot 156 (77,79) to finish tied for 16th among all participants.
The business administration-marketing major is involved in a number of campus programs. She serves as the president of LSSU's marketing club and has mentored a team at the Lukenda School of Business case competition. An active member of the university's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Wilkie organized this year's Christmas party. She also took part in the GLIAC Instagram takeover during the season, highlighting a day in the life of a Lake State student-athlete.
Wilkie is also an active member of the community of Sault Ste. Marie and other surrounding towns in the Upper Peninsula. She volunteers at the Pickford golf course with kids learning to play the sport, and also volunteered at the Pickford elementary school during Thanksgiving break to help in the classrooms. In addition, Wilkie volunteers at the Freighter View assisted living.
As a student-athlete, Wilkie has been a dedicated member to the golf team while also representing Lake State with pride and professionalism.
This year's female nominees for the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Coaches Trophy included Claire Radtke (basketball), Keegan Malpass (tennis), Sara Ostwald (track & field) and Halle Grulke (volleyball).
