Lakers Win Blue Devil Classic

GAYLORD, Mich.- The Lake Superior State women's golf team finished in first place to win the Blue Devil Classic, hosted by Lawrence Tech at Treetops Resort Golf Course in Gaylord, Mich. on Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday, Sept. 24. 

Day One: 

Following the first day of competition, the Lakers led the 11-team field with a combined score of 308. The Lakers had a seven stroke lead on their closest opponent, the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats after the opening day of play. "Another strong performance by women's golf'' was the remark from Head Coach Tony Crisp. Sophomore Alyshia Suleman led the way for Lake State as she shot a 75 including an even par front nine. Juniors Madison Wilkie and Taylor Simoneau were close behind Suleman with a pair of 76's. The final two members of the Lakers team were junior Naomi Keyte (81) and freshman Julia Vess (91) who contributed to the strong opening day from Lake State. 

Day Two:

The Lakers capped off their great start with a better second day to win the Blue Devil Classic. Lake State improved its first day score by two strokes (306) to earn the victory. Simoneau led the Lakers again as she shot a 72 on Tuesday to clinch fourth overall with a combined score of 148. Following in the fifth overall spot in the standings with a combined score of 150, Alyshia Suleman continued to play very well posting a 75 for the second time in as many days. Wilkie was the next Lakers finisher as she claimed eighth place overall with a two-day score of 157. Keyte also placed within the top ten finishers as her score both days totaled 159 to earn her ninth place overall. Out of the five Lakers competing in the event, four placed within the top ten finishers. Vess, who had a five point improvement from the first day on the course, ended the invitational strong as she shot an 86 to give her a combined score of 177. Vess tied for 30th overall, which placed her in the top half of all athletes that competed in the Blue Devil Classic. 

The Lake Superior women's golf team has had a great start to the 2019-20 season with the team placing first and second overall in the two tournaments that they have participated in so far. 

The Lakers will look to continue their strong play as they travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to compete in the Bulldog Fall Invitational hosted by Ferris State on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29. The Bulldog Fall Invite will open conference play for the Lakers as they will play at the historis Katke Golf Course.
