LSSU Basketball Teams Hit the Road For Conference Action

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.— The Lake Superior State men's and women's basketball teams will hit the road this weekend as they continue Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition against Grand Valley and Purdue Northwest.

On the Thursday, it's a battle of the Lakers as they take on GVSU in a double header at the Delta Plex Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men preceding at 8 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon, Lake State squares off with The Pride at 1 & 3 p.m. in Hammond, Ind.

Game Notes: WBB Game 1

Lake State will head into Thursday's meeting looking for their win of the season with a with an 0-13 record overall and a 0-9 mark in the GLIAC. Grand Valley is 14-3, 7-2.

Last time out, the Lakers fell to No.12-ranked Michigan Tech, 77-47, inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

For the season, LSSU is shooting 40.4 percent from the field with a 31.7 percentage from three-point range. GVSU is shooting 43.1 and 33.2 percent.

Senior forward Tamara Novic leads the team in scoring and rebounding this season averaging 12.2 points per game 6.5 boards per game. Novic also tops the conference in field goal percentage at 61.7.

Jen DeBoer leads Grand Valley offensively averaging 13.2 points per game. Taylor Parmley is posting 12.7.


Game Notes: MBB Game 2

The Laker men will look to make it three-straight as they enter Thursday's tilt with a 14-3 record overall and an 8-1 mark in the conference. LSSU defeated Michigan Tech, 84-73, last time out and share first place in the GLIAC North standing with Ferris State.

Grand Valley is 9-8, 4-5 on the season and is coming off an 80-71 win over Tiffin last weekend.

Lake State comes in averaging 82.8 points per game, which ranks No.2 in the league while allowing 69.1. GVSU is posting 77.2 points per game and allowing 71.9.

Senior guard Akaemji Williams paces the team in scoring and ranks No.3 in the conference averaging 19.6 points per game. Williams leads the league and ranks No.8 nationally in ball handling with 7.1 assists per contest.

Michael Nicholson, a senior, leads the GLIAC and ranks No.4 nationally in offensive efficiency with a 69.9.0 field goal percentage on the year. Nicholson is averaging 13.1 points per game and leads the team on the glass with 7.6 boards per game.

Blake Marquardt has been the team's best sharpshooter this season with a 50.5 percent clip from behind the arc which ranks No.2 in the GLIAC and No.4 nationally.

Hunter Hale leads the Grand Valley offense averaging 13.2 points per game. Jake VanTubbergen is posting 10.2.

Scouting Purdue Northwest:

The Pride women's team is 2-12 overall the season with a 1-8 mark in the GLIAC to start to their season. They will take on Ferris State at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

PNW is shooting 34.3.2 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the arc. Shae Rhonehouse leads Purdue Northwest in scoring averaging 11.7 per game. Lindsay Winter is posting 10.4.

The Pride men's squad is 1-16 overall this season with a 1-8 clips in league action. They host Ferris State at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

PNW is shooting 40.2 percent from the field and 32.2 percent from long distance. Tyree Coe leads the team offensively averaging 13.7 points per contest. Chandler Spring is posting 14.
