Lake State Basketball Teams Host a Pair of Rivals Inside Bud Cooper This Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.— The Lake Superior State men's and women's basketball teams will host a pair of Upper Peninsula rivals this weekend as they welcome Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition.

On the Thursday, the Lakers take on the Wildcats in double header action with the women's game tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men's beginning at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lakers square off against the Huskies with the women starting at 1 p.m. and the men preceding at 3 p.m.

WBB Game Notes: Lakers vs Wildcats

The Lakers enter Thursday's game in search of their first win of the season with a with an 0-11 record overall and a 0-7 mark in the GLIAC. The Wildcats are 7-8, 3-4.

Lake State fell to Wayne State, 76-43, in Detroit last Saturday. Northern is coming off a 99-59 loss to Ashland.

For the season, LSSU is shooting 40.1 percent from the field with a 30.1 percentage from three-point range. NMU is shooting 41.6 and 29.5 percent.

Senior forward Tamara Novic leads the team in scoring and rebounding this season averaging 13.1 points per game 7.0 boards per game. Novic also tops the conference in field goal percentage at 61.7.

Darby Youngstrom leads NMU offensively averaging 14.1 points per game. Lexi Smith is posting 11.9.

MBB Game Notes: Lakers vs Wildcats

The Laker men are in search of a bounce back performance after they were upset, xx-xx, at Wayne State last week to snap their unbeaten streak in conference play.

Lake State owns a 12-3 record overall with a 6-1 mark in league play entering Thursday's tilt. Northern is 9-5, 6-1 while both teams are deadlocked in a three-way tie for first place in the GLIAC North Division standing with Ferris State (16-1, 6-1).

LSSU comes in averaging 83 points per game, which ranks No.2 in the league while allowing 69.5. NMU is posting 74.9 points per game and allowing 70.9.

Senior guard Akaemji Williams paces the team in scoring and ranks No.3 in the conference averaging 18.8 points per game. Williams leads the league and ranks No.7 nationally in ball handling with 7.4 assists per contest.

Michael Nicholson, a senior, leads the GLIAC and ranks No.5 nationally in offensive efficiency with a 71.0 field goal percentage on the year. Nicholson is averaging 13.6 points per game and leads the team on the glass with 7.7 boards per game.

Blake Marquardt has been the team's best sharpshooter this season with a league-best 50.6 percent clip from behind the arc which ranks No.7 in the nation.

Naba Echols leads the Wildcats offense averaging 17.5 points per game.  Isaiah Johnson is close second posting 17.3 per contest.

Scouting Michigan Tech:

The Huskies women's team is out to a 12-2, 6-1 start to their season and are tied for first in the GLIAC North standings with Grand Valley (13-2, 6-1)

MTU is shooting 48.2 percent from the field, which ranks second in the league, and is No.1 in the GLIAC with a 38.0 percent clip from three-point range. Tech is

Kelli Guy leads the Huskies scoring attack averaging 12.8 per game. Lindsay Winter is posting 12.6 and Brenna Heise adds 12.1 per contest.

The Michigan Tech men's squad is 7-7 overall with a 4-3 mark in the GLIAC this season and sit in fourth place in the North Division standing.

The Huskies are shooting 47.4 percent from the field and 39 percent from long distance. Kyle Monroe tops the GLIAC scoring charts and ranks No.4 nationally averaging 26 points per game.
