Edwards ties career three-point record during final home appearance

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State closed the home portion of the women's basketball season Saturday with a 75-53 loss to Wayne State at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Guard Mackenzie Edwards totaled a team-leading 15 points and six rebounds, and once again entered the record books during her final home game. The Lakers paid tribute to Edwards at the conclusion of the game, recognizing her leadership during the past four years and school-record tying 179 career three-pointers. She was 2-for-7 from behind the arc against Wayne State, increasing her single-season school record to 66 triples.

Edwards' career three-point field goal total ties the mark set by Hillary Bultema '04. She leads the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in three-pointers made and averages 13.7 points per game to rank 10th in league scoring. She heads into her final game Feb. 23 at Northwood with 1,075 points.

Wayne State (8-19 overall, 5-15 GLIAC) jumped to an early 10-point lead and controlled most of the game. The Warriors extended the lead to 19 points late in the second quarter. LSSU (5-22 overall, 3-17 GLIAC) went on a 12-4 run to open the second half, cutting its deficit to eight points. WSU answered with back-to-back baskets and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final 14 minutes.

Lexie Khon added 12 points and five rebounds for the Lakers, who were playing without injured starting center Tamara Novic, who averages 10.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. LSSU shot 40.4 percent from the field, including 5-of-21 from three-point range, and made 10-of-11 free throws.

Christina Green and Shannon Wilson scored 21 points each and combined to total 15 rebounds for Wayne State, which out-scored LSSU 46-14 in the paint. The Warriors shot 50.9 percent from the field, including 5-of-12 from three-point range, and made 12-of-13 free throws. They out-rebounded the Lakers, 33-24.
