Cavs turn the tables on LSSU in the second half

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State made a statement following Thursday's setback against Lake Erie and stifled Walsh during the first half Saturday. After trailing by 23 points, the Cavaliers turned the tables during the second half to pull out an 83-80 overtime victory.

The LSSU women's basketball team (2-9 overall 1-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) limited Walsh to 21 first-half points. The Cavs (7-5 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) worked their way back into the game by shutting down LSSU's offense in the third quarter and making 9-of-13 field-goal attempts and 10-of-10 free throws during the fourth quarter.

Walsh tied it, 70-70, on an Alex Hochstedler layup during the final minute of regulation and led for the first time when Brittni Clopton and Brooklyn Wooten made back-to-back layups midway through the overtime period. A three-pointer by Jalynn Graham with 1:09 remaining in the extra period put the Cavaliers up for good.

Hochstedler and Wooten were a combined 13-of-24 from the field and led Walsh with 19 points each. Walsh shot 43.3 percent from the field for the game, including 4-of-22 from three-point range, and made 21-of-29 free throws. The Cavaliers edged LSSU in rebounding, 38-36, and out-scored the Lakers in points off turnovers, 21-13.

LSSU senior Mackenzie Edwards led all scorers with 25 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Rachel Novotny finished with 16 points and six rebounds, and Natalie Peterson, Valerie Meissner and Tamara Novic added 10 points each. Meissner also totaled nine assists.

LSSU shot 47.5 percent from the field for the game, including 9-of-19 from three-point range, and made 15-of-17 free throws. The Lakers were 10-of-14 from the field during the first quarter, but 3-of-12 in the third.

Lake Superior State plays a make-up game at 1 p.m. Sunday against Algoma University.
