Lakers fall 61-53 against McKendree

HILLSDALE, Mich. – For the second time on the weekend, Lake Superior State women's basketball fell against a Great Lakes Valley Conference member in non-conference play.

The Lakers (0-2) fell 61-53 against McKendree, representing the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover matchup, hosted by Hillsdale College.

For the second straight game, the Lakers held a slim lead at the half but surrendered the lead after the Bearcats opened the third quarter with a 13-6 run. A three-pointer from senior guard Mackenzie Edwards with 52 seconds remaining in the third gave the Lakers a 44-43 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.

With under six minutes remaining McKendree took a 53-50 lead , which they would hold for nearly four minutes as both teams failed to score until under the two-minute mark. The Bearcats closed out the victory with an 8-3 run, highlighted by a pair of Ellie Pushek layups.

Edwards led the Lakers with a game-high 19 points on six-of-11 shooting from the floor and five-of-eight behind the arc. The Gaylord, Mich., native also chipped in four rebounds, three steals and two assists while playing 36 minutes.

Pushek led the Bearcats with 12 points. Madison Hart and Megan Jensen each added 10 points off the bench for McKendree.

While struggling to score from the field, (17-for-50) the Lakers posted a respectable 11-for-25 mark from behind the three-point line, while McKendree shooters hit on 43.5 percent of shots from the field but went just one-for-five from behind the arc.

The Lakers return home for a 1 p.m. game against Grace Bible College on Tuesday, Nov. 15 inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Admission to the Lakers' game against the Tigers is free.
